John Roberts - Chairman
John Roberts was Chief Executive of United Utilities plc from 1999 to 2006. He has spent his working life in the management of Utilities companies, rising to Chief Executive of Manweb plc in 1992, following spells as the company's Finance Director and Managing Director. He left Manweb in 1995, following the company's takeover by Scottish Power, and spent some time as a freelance consultant in the sector. In 1996, he joined Hyder plc, initially as Chief Executive of South Wales Electricity, and then as Chief Executive of Hyder Utilities in 1997. John is a graduate of Liverpool University, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants, and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute. He is Chairman of Cory Environmental Holdings Ltd, and a Non-Executive Director of International Power Plc, Royal Bank of Canada (Europe), and BlackRock New Energy Investment Trust Ltd. He is a past President of the Electricity Association, was Chairman of Electricity Pension Trustee Limited, and was a Member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution.
Brian Count
Brian received an honours degree in mathematics from Kings College, Cambridge and a doctorate in physics from Exeter University. He joined the Central Electricity Generation Board (CEGB) in 1974 and rose to become Director of Operations in National Power, the largest UK generating company formed on privatisation of the industry. In 2000 he was appointed Chief Operating Officer and became Chief Executive in 2002 of Innogy plc, the public company comprising National Power's UK business. He transformed the company from a generator to an integrated energy business and the acquisition by RWE of Innogy plc in 2003 delivered a substantial return to shareholders. Brian became Chief Executive of RWE Trading, based in Essen, Germany where he remained until he retired from RWE in 2005. In this role he grew the European energy trading business to become the commercial hub of the RWE group. His current roles are Chairman of Ceres Power, an AIM listed company developing fuel cell based micro chp, Chairman of Progressive Energy, a company that is working to develop a clean coal fired power station in the UK, an Non-Executive Director of Sterecycle which is involved in improving the environmental disposal of municipal waste and is Chairman and founder member of Jacaoma which is involved in African agriculture in Malawi. He; is also a member of the UK Industrial Development Advisory Board of the DBERR. He has extensive experience of international energy utilities and has been involved with governments and regulatory matters in both the UK and Europe.
Rory Curran
Rory has over twenty years experience in technology and retail financial services and he brings to REM his recent experiences of building a profitable technology business from start-up to trade sale. He co-founded Independent Specialist Technology (trading as '1st') in 1995 which designs and markets client management software for financial intermediaries, ranging from SMEs to divisions of global institutions. Today, 1st has over 14,000 licensed users and in 2008 achieved an EBITA of over £6m. Over the years, the company won external recognition in Deloitte's IT Fast 50, Sunday Times FastTrack 100, ProfitTrack 100 and Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards. The company was sold to Vertex, a subsidiary of United Utilities in early 2006, and Rory served as Executive Chairman until March 2008. In addition to his NED role with REM, Rory is Chairman of Urban Mapz Limited which develops online high street maps and he is the founder of Tildy's Trust which raises money for research into curing childhood leukaemia.
Gareth Hughes
Gareth is Founder and Managing Partner of Beetle Capital Partners Ltd, a specialist low carbon investment and fund advisory business. His specific responsibility is the overall development and management of Fund Advisory, Placement and Investor Relations activities. Prior to establishing Beetle, Gareth was a Founder and Board member of Climate Change Capital ('CCC') with overall responsibility for Marketing, Fund Development, Capital Raising and Investor Relations. In this role Gareth was involved in the incubation and development of CCC's funds and led capital raising of in excess of $1.75bn for the C4F1/C4F2 (Carbon Funds), CPE (Clean Tech Private Equity Fund) and GEF (Long-Short Environmental Hedge Fund), CCPF (Climate Focused Real Estate)Fund) and Ventus 1, 2 & 3 (UK Focused Renewable Energy Project Venture Capital Trust Funds). During the development period of CCC Gareth had overall responsibility for Business Development and Origination.
As part of his general business development activities Gareth raised the seed capital and helped launch The Ice Organisation ('Ice') and Remote Energy Monitoring ('REM'). Ice is an enterprise focused on the mass mobilization of consumer purchasing power for the mitigation of climate change. REM is an end-to-end smart metering solution. Gareth is on the Board of both entities. Gareth is a Trustee of the Global Cool Foundation.
As a former Managing Director of the Marsh Marine and Energy Practice and MMC Enterprise Risk, Gareth has over 20 years' experience in energy risk management and insurance, and led climate change and sustainable development activities within Marsh. He was a Member of the Steering Committee of the Climate Change Projects Office (CCPO) established by the UK Government to advise and assist UK business to take on Joint Implementation (JI) and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. He was part of the Government-sponsored Innovation and Growth Team for the Environmental Goods and Services Sector.
Pietrojan Gilardini
Pietrojan Gilardini is MD and Founder of Nur Energie Italia and CFO of Nur Energie Limited a solar power plant developer focused on the Mediterranean . He was previously a Director Allco Wind Energy (Allco Finance Group) investing in wind and solar projects. Before Allco he was with STAR Capital, a £800m European private equity fund where he focused on a wide range of renewable and energy efficiency technologies. Prior to that he was a Director at Deutsche Bank where he acted for telecom, power and private equity clients for 10 years across Europe and the Middle East. Pietrojan was attracted to REM for two main reasons: a strong belief that the integration of traditional 'dumb' meters with the data management business provides an innovative solution to resolving the utilities sector bad debt problems and secondly an increasing demand from customers to monitor their energy consumption in the current recessionary environment. Pietrojan holds an engineering degree from Oxford University and an MBA from Columbia University.
